What does the scarab beetle mean in ancient Egypt?

The beetle is the god Khepri, the sun at dawn; the word kheper means “to come into being”. A stone heart scarab was laid on the mummy.

What the sign shows: The dung beetle, which rolls a ball along the ground and buries it.
How Gerald Massey read it in 1907: His standard example of a sign that is not a god: the beetle stands for transformation, one thing becoming another.
Where you see it today: Scarab seals and rings are among the most copied Egyptian objects in the world.
Where it stands in Massey’s book: Massey names it 155 times across the book. Book VII, p. 407: “Father, mother and child in one”; Book XII, p. 732: “The long hand of the heavenly clock”; Book III, p. 136b: “A beetle for a new heart”.
Signs that look like it: Bee, Frog and Fish. The app’s Symbol Trainer sets them side by side, so the eye learns to tell them apart.
In Massey’s words: “The power of evolution was portrayed in Kheper, the transformer.” (Gerald Massey, Ancient Egypt: The Light of the World (1907), Book VI, p. 332)
In the app: Trainer › Symbol Trainer › Scarab. The app’s Symbol Trainer reads 42 signs this way, each with Massey’s own words and the page they stand on.
