Separation is the third of the twelve stages of alchemy, part of the black stage (nigredo). It is the sorting of the work: the fine is parted from the coarse and the pure from the cloudy. In spiritual alchemy it means keeping what is yours: which beliefs you chose and which you inherited, and where your edges are.
What the alchemists did
Separation meant parting the dissolved matter into its components, by filtering, settling, decanting or distilling: the fine from the coarse and the pure from the impure, as the Emerald Tablet instructs.
What it means in you
Once the matter has dissolved, the alchemists separated it: the fine from the coarse, the pure from the cloudy, what to keep from what to throw away. In you, this is the week of sorting. Which beliefs are yours, and which did you inherit? Where are your edges? What is worth keeping, even from the hard years?

Gate 3 carries the Third Key of Basil Valentine’s Twelve Keys, the key of the dragon. Fire is overcome by water, and then the fire rises again and wins.
In the old masters’ words
“Separate the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross, acting prudently and with judgment.” Hermes Trismegistus, The Emerald Tablet
“Everything that is obtained from the mines has its value.” Basil Valentine, The Twelve Keys, 1599
A question to sit with
What in your life is truly yours, and what did you pick up from others?
Who gave it to you?
Does it still serve you?
What would you choose instead?
From the app’s daily quiz
The Emerald Tablet says to separate the fine from the… Coarse. Gently and with good judgment. Gate 3 is the week of sorting what is yours.
Why does a vessel need walls? To hold anything at all. People need edges too. A boundary is the shape of you, not a wall against others.
Basil Valentine warned that if too much seed is thrown into a field… Nothing ripens. The plants choke each other. Gate 3 is about pruning what crowds you.
Many of the voices in our heads are… Borrowed. Gate 3 asks whose voice it is: which beliefs are yours, and which did you inherit?
In the alchemists’ glass, what does the fine part of the matter do? Rises. The fine part rises while the heavy part settles at the bottom.
