What does Kemet, Egypt’s own name, mean?

Kemet was the ancient Egyptians’ own name for their country, written kmt in hieroglyphs, which leave out the vowels. It means “the Black Land”, after the dark, fertile silt that the Nile’s yearly flood left along its valley, where the crops grew. It was the opposite of Deshret, “the Red Land”, the desert on either side. Most Egyptologists read the name as describing the land and its soil; some modern writers read it as describing the people. Gerald Massey’s word Kamite, in his 1907 book, comes from the same name and simply means Egyptian.
