Putrefaction is the fifth of the twelve stages of alchemy, part of the black stage (nigredo). It is the blackening of the work, the darkest and most hopeful stage: the matter is left to rot until it is black as a crow, because new life only comes after the old breaks down. In spiritual alchemy it is about endings, grief and patience in the dark.
What the alchemists did
Putrefaction meant letting the joined matter rot and blacken in a sealed vessel under a gentle, steady heat. The books show it with a black crow, a skeleton or a dead king, because the alchemists held that nothing new could grow until the old had broken down. It is the heart of the black stage, the nigredo.
What it means in you
This is the darkest gate, and the most hopeful. The alchemists let their matter rot until it was black as a crow, because they knew new life only comes after the old has broken down. A seed must split in the dark soil before it sprouts. This week is about endings: grief, letting go, and the patience to wait in the dark without panic.

In the old masters’ words

“The farmer’s wife knows that she cannot hope to obtain chickens except through the decomposition of the egg.” Basil Valentine, The Twelve Keys, 1599

What is ending in your life right now?
How do you feel about it?
What are you afraid comes next?
What might this ending make room for?
