Who is Ptah, the Egyptian creator god of Memphis?

Ptah was the creator god of Memphis, Egypt’s ancient capital, and the patron of craftsmen: builders, sculptors and metalworkers. A famous text from Memphis says he made the world by thought and word, conceiving all things in his heart and calling them into being with his tongue. He is shown as a man wrapped tightly like a mummy, with a skullcap and a beard, holding a staff that joins the signs for life, power and stability.

Who he was in Egypt: At Memphis he formed a family with the lion goddess Sekhmet and their son Nefertem, the god of the lotus. The sacred Apis bull, kept beside his temple, was called “the herald of Ptah”. Ptah was also a god who heard prayers: people dedicated small stone tablets carved with ears to him, so that he would listen. The Greeks matched him with their smith god, Hephaestus.
How he is shown: Ptah himself has no animal head: he is a man, wrapped, his staff held out before him. The staff joins the ankh, the was sceptre and the djed pillar. He was joined with Sokar, the falcon god of the Memphis cemeteries, as Ptah-Sokar, and later with Osiris too: painted wooden figures of Ptah-Sokar-Osiris were placed in tombs. As Ptah-Tatenen he was the land that first rose from the waters of creation.
How Gerald Massey read him in 1907: Massey calls Ptah “the opener”. In his reading Ptah and seven helpers, the Knemmu, dug out Amenta, the world below, as a tunnel for the sun, the moon and the dead, and set up the Tat, the Djed pillar, as its fixed support. He knew the Memphis text and writes of Ptah’s creation by the word, but for Massey what that word called into being was Amenta, the hidden earth, not the universe. He traces Ptah’s helpers into the Elohim, a Hebrew name for God in Genesis.
What scholars say now: Ptah’s place as creator and craftsman is not in doubt, and Egyptian spells do ask him to open the mouth of the dead, which fits Massey’s name for him. But scholars read the Memphis text as the making of the gods and of all things by thought and speech, not of the world below alone, and they do not accept Massey’s picture of Ptah digging out the underworld, one stage in his scheme of star, moon and sun myths. Nor do biblical scholars derive the Elohim of Genesis from Ptah’s helpers.
Where you meet him today: The Memphis text survives on the Shabaka Stone, now in the British Museum. The stone was later used as a millstone, and the grinding wore away much of its text. The word Egypt itself is usually traced, through the Greek Aigyptos, to Hut-ka-Ptah, “house of the ka (spirit) of Ptah”, a name of his temple at Memphis.
In Massey’s words: “It was as the maker of Amenta that Ptah became the architect of the universe.” (Gerald Massey, Ancient Egypt: The Light of the World (1907), Book VII, p. 413)
