Projection is the twelfth of the twelve stages of alchemy, part of the red stage (rubedo). It is the alchemists’ final act: casting the finished stone onto ordinary metal to turn it to gold. In spiritual alchemy it means your gold, cast into the world: using what you know in your words, your work and your love.
What the alchemists did
Projection was the alchemists’ final act: casting a small amount of the finished stone onto molten base metal, which, they claimed, turned to gold or silver. No such transmutation has ever been confirmed. In spiritual alchemy, projection means using what the work has made in you, in ordinary days.
What it means in you
Projection was the alchemists’ final act: casting the finished stone onto ordinary metal and watching it turn to gold. This is the last gate of the Great Work. Everything you have made in yourself now goes out into your ordinary days: your words, your work, your love. This week is about using what you know, and looking back at how far you have come.

Gate 12 carries the Twelfth Key of Basil Valentine’s Twelve Keys, the key of projection, the use of the finished work. Knowing is not enough; you have to use what you know.
In the old masters’ words
“He that has knowledge and experience on his side, must carry off the victory.” Basil Valentine, The Twelve Keys, 1599
“Gold by itself does not fear the fire.” Eirenaeus Philalethes, An Open Entrance to the Closed Palace of the King, 1645
