Calcination is the first of the twelve stages of alchemy, part of the black stage (nigredo). It is the burning that begins the Great Work: the alchemists heated their matter until everything false in it turned to ash. In spiritual alchemy it means burning off what isn’t you: the habits, masks and old stories you carry.
What the alchemists did
In the laboratory, calcination meant heating a substance in an open crucible or furnace until it was reduced to a dry powder or ash, which the alchemists called a calx. They read the burning as a purification: whatever could burn away had never been the true matter.
What it means in you
The alchemists began every Work with fire. They heated their matter until everything false in it turned to ash and only what was real stayed. In you, the matter is your own life: the habits, masks and old stories you carry. This week you hold them up to a gentle fire, one at a time, and see what stays.

In the old masters’ words
“The chief principle of the art is the Crow, which is the blackness of the night and clearness of the day.” Hermes Trismegistus, The Golden Tractate
“Gold by itself does not fear the fire.” Eirenaeus Philalethes, An Open Entrance to the Closed Palace of the King, 1645

From the app’s daily quiz
The alchemists began every Work with which element? Fire. They heated their matter until everything false turned to ash and only what was real stayed.
What did the alchemists call the heavy, ordinary matter they started with? The black crow. It wasn’t a mistake to be thrown away. It was the beginning.
What did the alchemists find inside the ash after the fire? The salt. The salt is the part that cannot burn. Whatever burns away in you leaves something real behind.
Gold by itself does not fear the… Fire. Philalethes’ line. What is truly yours survives the heat.
In Gate 1, what do we all wear, and slowly burn away? Masks. The gentle fire of calcination shows which faces aren’t really you.
