Sublimation is the eighth of the twelve stages of alchemy, part of the white stage (albedo). It is the rising of the work: the finest part of the matter rises as vapour and settles again, purer. In spiritual alchemy it means seeing your life from higher up, letting go of grudges, and bringing what you see back down into ordinary days.
What the alchemists did
Sublimation meant heating a solid until its finest part rose as vapour and settled again, purer, on the cooler upper part of the vessel. The alchemists pictured it as white birds flying up.
What it means in you
In sublimation, the finest part of the matter rises as vapour, then settles again, purer. The alchemists pictured it as white birds flying up from the vessel. In you, this is the week of perspective: seeing your life from higher up, letting go of grudges, and bringing what you see back down into ordinary days.

In the old masters’ words
“Ascend with the greatest sagacity from the earth to heaven, and then again descend to the earth, and unite together the powers of things superior and things inferior.” Hermes Trismegistus, The Emerald Tablet
“Let us not lose the time of a life as short as ours in disputing.” Antoine-Joseph Pernety, The Great Art, 1758
A question to sit with
What would this week look like from very high above?
What looks small from there?
What looks important?
What would you do differently?
From the app’s daily quiz
How did the alchemists picture sublimation? White birds flying up. The finest part of the matter rises as vapour, then settles again, purer.
The Emerald Tablet says to rise from earth to heaven, and then… Come down again. Uniting the powers of what is above and what is below.
Gate 8 calls one of the highest forms of rising above… Forgiveness. Letting go of a grudge lifts you higher than any victory.
Which bird stands for grace? The white swan. Moving through life with ease, even when the water is choppy.
Rising is only half of sublimation. The other half is… Coming back down. Bringing what you see from above back into ordinary days.
