What is congelation in alchemy?

Congelation is the sixth of the twelve stages of alchemy, part of the white stage (albedo). It is the setting of the work, the first stage of the white: the matter thickens and sets like water turning to ice. In spiritual alchemy it is when the new self begins to set, through small, repeated choices.

What the alchemists did

Congelation meant thickening and setting: the liquid matter becoming a stable, solid body, like water turning to ice or salt forming crystals. It opens the white stage, the albedo.

What it means in you

After the black comes the white. The alchemists watched their matter thicken and set, like water turning to ice or salt forming crystals. This is the first gate of Clearing. Everything you loosened in the shadow work now begins to take a new, steadier shape. This week is about small, repeated choices that make the new you solid.

Gate 6 carries the Seventh Key of Basil Valentine’s Twelve Keys, the key of warmth. A moderate heat keeps life going; too much destroys it.
