What is Focus 12 in the Gateway Process?

In the 1983 Army report on the Gateway Process, Focus 12 is the state of "greatly expanded awareness" reached after Focus 10 (page 20). It is where the program's techniques are used: problem solving, patterning, color breathing, the energy bar tool, remote viewing and the living body map (pages 20 to 21). The report's closing proposals also center on Focus 12 exercises. The Monroe Institute's bulletin in the same collection labels it expanded awareness.

How the report defines Focus 12

Paragraph 30 on page 20 describes the move from Focus 10: the participant tries "to achieve a state of sufficiently expanded awareness to begin actually interacting with dimensions beyond those associated with his experience of physical reality." Then: "This state is called Focus 12 and involves conscious efforts on his part while additional forms of 'pink and white noise' enter the sound stream."

Two things stand out. Focus 12 is described as effortful, not passive. And the report credits the shift to added sound on the tape plus the participant's intent, not to a specific frequency. For the report's actual statements about sound, see What frequency does the Gateway Process use?

What is done in Focus 12

Once in Focus 12, the report says, the participant begins "a series of specific techniques or 'tools' as the Monroe Institute characterizes them." Six follow, lettered A to F on pages 20 and 21: problem solving, patterning, color breathing, the energy bar tool, remote viewing and the living body map.

Page 22 confirms the grouping: "All of the preceding techniques are conducted at the level of expanded awareness known as Focus 12." Focus 15 and Focus 21 then require "further expansion of consciousness." Each tool is described on the Gateway tools page, and patterning has its own page.

Focus 12 in the report's conclusions

The author's proposed program on pages 26 and 27 leans on Focus 12. Step D is to use autohypnotic suggestion "in rapidly progressing through Focus 12 exercises." Step K proposes having "groups of people in Focus 12 state unite their altered consciousness to build holographic patterns around sensitive areas."

These are proposals. The report calls them "experiments" and ends by hoping they will be "carried through." No record in the collection reports that they were.

The Monroe Institute's label

Bulletin GW22280 (CIA-RDP96-00788R001700210048-0), a two-page Monroe Institute leaflet in the CIA's Star Gate collection, lists Focus 12 as expanded awareness, between Focus 10 and Focus 15. It is the Institute's own promotional wording, so it is described here, not reproduced. The report borrows the same phrase.

What the documents say, and what people claim

The documents: Focus 12 is a state of expanded awareness, reached with effort after Focus 10, in which six visualization techniques are practiced. The report describes the techniques as the Institute teaches them. It measures nothing.

The claims: that Focus 12 lets you solve any problem, heal, or view distant places, and that the government proved it. The report repeats what trainers told the author, calls the mechanisms postulated, and proposes tests. Treat descriptions of what Focus 12 "does" as descriptions of a training exercise, not as results.
